COACH: MATTHEW LANGFORD
Growing up on the banks of the Balonne River in St George, Queensland, freshwater fishing runs deep in my veins. Fishing to me is more than the hook up, it’s about the experience. It’s the adventure, the thrill of the catch, camping in the outdoors, telling stories around the camp fire and knowing that I’m right where I belong. It is a feeling of absolute freedom. Through my work as a Freshwater Fishing Guide, and Professional Tournament Angler, I want to help others experience the same love for fishing and the great Australian outdoors as I do.
Australian Fishing Championships
The Australian Fishing Championships (AFC) is the pinnacle of fishing in Australia. Each year the eight best anglers compete for the coveted championship title and the competition is broadcast around the world. Past and present AFC champions will be on location throughout the trip providing expert tuition and advice on how to catch the iconic Australian Barramundi sportfish using the best gear and technology.
Day 1 – Wednesday 16 October 2019
Fly from Cairns to Mount Isa with our guide and team and together on to Lake Moondarra. Mount Isa is affectionately known by locals as ‘The Isa’ and is described as where the outback lives. Forged from a pioneering lead and silver mining town it’s set on the banks of the Leichardt River, a dramatic green contrast to the hardened red terrain. We’ll help set up basecamp at Lake Moondarra, unpack and enjoy dinner under the stars.
Day 2 – Thursday 17 October 2019
Lake Moondarra, on the Leichhardt River in Queensland, Australia, 16 km downstream from the town of Mount Isa, provides water to the town and the adjacent Mount Isa Mines mining lease. The lake is popular with birdwatchers, sailors and anglers, as it is stocked with barramundi and sooty grunter. We’re up and on the water early for our first fishing session to watch and learn from the best anglers in Australia. After breakfast it’s time for our first skills session where we’ll try our hand at fishing and boating. Enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch by the lake before a guided hike or an opportunity to relax and read a book. In the afternoon it’s time for some fun – have a go at four-wheel-driving in the Australian bush. Learn from expert drivers how to handle the vehicles when driving off-road, and how to get out when you get stuck! Share your stories and photos over dinner around the campfire before we hit the water for night fishing. It’s an amazing experience being on the water in the quiet dark, hopefully only disrupted by the thrill of landing a Barra!
Day 3 – Friday 18 October 2019
We’re on the water early again this morning to watch the pro’s in action. Then after breakfast it’s our turn to have a go. Let the AFC anglers perfect your technique and hopefully help you land a big one. Lake Moondarra is a fishing haven, but is also a sight of significant cultural importance. The lake was the location for one of Australia’s largest stone axe quarries which unearthed axes traded amongst Aborigines as far as 1,000 km away. Mount Isa is situated on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon people who followed patterns of hunting and gathering, fishing and trade for many thousands of years before the arrival of the first Europeans. Kalkadoon craftsmen were famous for the quality of their hand-crafted stone implements which were traded with other Aboriginal groups across western Queensland. We’ll be joined by one of the Kalkadoon people who will prepare a traditional bush-tucker lunch then take us on a ‘walkabout’ and share stories of the local area. A rare and truly authentic Indigenous Australian experience. Later that evening, after a hearty campfire dinner try your news skills (and luck) during another evening fishing session – fingers crossed you can land a Barra and snap a photo of the experience.
Day 4 – Saturday 19 October 2019
One last campfire breakfast together before we pack-up and head home. We’ll depart at 9am for Mount Isa Airport and board a flight to Brisbane where we say thank you, goodbye and hopefully see you next year.
