If you’re looking for a running challenge this year, look no further than the Gold Coast Marathon, Australia’s pinnacle road running event.
Go for Gold in the Gold Coast Marathon:
On 2 September 1979, the Gold Coast suburb of Evandale hosted the inaugural Gold Coast Marathon. The event was initiated by the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise Central as part of a health awareness campaign for the Gold Coast.
Today, the Gold Coast Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race having distinguished itself as one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. Its famous flat, fast and scenic course located alongside the city’s renowned surf beaches and stunning waterways plus ideal winter running conditions featuring low humidity, little wind and mild temperatures result in 60% of participants achieving personal best times each year.
Australia’s Gold Coast is the ultimate active city, offering sand, surf, and world heritage-listed rainforest under more than 300 days of glorious sunshine a year. With an enviable natural environment, the Gold Coast is widely acknowledged as one of the best sports training locations in the world.
- Feel energised as you laugh with family and friends on the golden beaches.
- Soak up the atmosphere amid the array of shopping, dining and entertainment options.
- Feel like a kid again in the ultimate playground that is the Gold Coast theme parks.
- Search for hidden treasures when you escape to the small country villages and World Heritage listed rainforests in the Gold Coast Hinterland.
In 2018, Kenyan Kenneth Mungara won an amazing third Gold Coast Marathon in a thrilling finish over Japan’s Kenta Murayama in a time of 2:09:49. Mungara has created history at the event, setting the Australian all comers and race record of 2:08:42 in 2015, followed by a further two victories in 2016 and 2018, a second in 2017.
Kenya’s Ruth Chebitok set a new race record in 2018 of 2:24:49 and in doing so recorded the fourth fastest time ever recorded in Australia with her win in the women’s Marathon. Interestingly, the only three faster marathon times on Australian soil were the three female placegetters at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Australian para athletics star Madison de Rozario returned to the same course of her Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games marathon gold medal with a dominant display of wheelchair racing at the 2018 Gold Coast Marathon. De Rozario won in 1:48:21, the second fastest time ever recorded at the event.
It would be remiss of us to discuss superstars and not to mention a true hero of the Gold Coast Marathon, Yuki Kawauchi. Yuki, known to many in Japan as the ‘citizen runner’ because he works full-time and trains at his own expense, has an impressive honour roll at the event. Fourth in 2012, first in 2013, third in 2014, eighth in 2015, second in 2016 and third in 2017. Only Australian running legend and Gold Coast Marathon ambassador, Pat Carroll, with seven, has more podium finishes in the history of the event. We hope that Yuki will continue his love affair with the Gold Coast and we will see him mount the podium yet again.
Participants have lots of opportunities to meet, run alongside and gain valuable running tips from five of Australia’s greatest marathon legends in the lead up to and over Gold Coast Marathon weekend.
One such event ambassador is over very own Benita Willis.
“I love the Gold Coast and feel this buzz of excitement in the air during the whole Gold Coast Marathon weekend. The organisers do a great job with such smooth running of all races and making it such a great experience for all involved.”
Other ambassadors include Pat Carroll, Robert de Castella, Steve Moneghetti, Lee Troop, Andrew ‘Reidy’ Reid, and Danielle Byrnes.

The ASICS Sport & Leisure Expo adds even more colour and atmosphere to the Gold Coast Marathon weekend.
